The Lies You’ve Told

How often do you lie? Did you lie just then? Do you think it’s ok to tell the lies you’ve told? Why or why not?

How often do you think others lie to you? Why do you think they do?

Would you rather tell the truth? Would you rather hear the truth?

  1. Those are great questions. I was recently having a convo about lying with my sibling. I tend to be really honest to the point that sometimes I don’t think about how my honesty will affect other people’s feelings, to honor honesty. And they were making the point that sometimes it’s okay to lie. I think this is true in some situations like when two people asked me who’s shoes do I like better, and I couldn’t find it in me to pick, so I said both. But then other times, I’m like it leaves false promises. Of all the people, I think I tend to lie the most frequently to myself when I don’t want to face truths within me. This also reminds of the times when people say they’re doing good but really they’re not or to an extent. I count myself in that group. I wonder if people lie to be perceived a certain way, to not hurt people’s feeling, to not cause worry/disappointment to loved ones. Thank you for the opportunity to reflect on this topic.

  2. I tend to swing more towards telling the truth and hearing the truth than a lot of people. It surprises me when people tell “white lies” that aren’t needed but as well I can see how and why it happens. I guess I’m just a straight forward person. I’d rather someone tell me say, they feel too anxious to meet up tomorrow than make excuses. I think as well it depends on context and situation, how close you are to the person and so on. I’ve definitely told silly white lies in the past when very young like at school that I’d had a boyfriend as I was being bullied and told no way I would have one lol. I did it to get them off my back but as well I’ve changed and grown and as an adult prefer honest people, even if it might be at times something I don’t want to hear. I think I can count on one hand how many times I’ve lied to someone in my personal life as an adult and it’s something I really do not and don’t do unless it’s a last resort. I think others lie to me more but I blot that out and am very trusting as I assume people are like me. What are your thoughts? Loved this question, by the way and it made me think.
